  1. A superior adaptation of the work of Matsumoto Seicho. This films stands out from other such efforts by maintaining the mystery, rather than providing a slow-drip of information that doesn’t allow for much curiosity. That is, most Matsumoto adaptations don’t give enough information to solve the mystery, instead revealing What Really Happened at the end, whether the viewer likes it or not.

This film also benefits from strong performances from its entire cast. The leads are often outshined by the supporting roles, played by the always-oily Kaneko Nobuo, an excellent turn by Ashida Shinsuke, a solid Noro Keisuke, and a genuinely deranged performance by Ishizuka Midori.

Finally, this film is one of Suzuki Seijun’s early works and, despite the clockwork plot, he managed several moments of real visual flair, including two instances of tracking shots across multiple rooms that are a pleasure to behold.
